Macaroni Menus: Crock Pot Cereal Mix

By Kayt DeMerchant January 25, 2015
My grandmother used to make cereal mix for me, my sister and my cousins to munch on. I love her recipe and have made it several times for my own kids (although, admittedly, I may eat more of it than they do). It was always pretty cumbersome to make a large batch, however, as I had to lay everything out in a thin layer on cookie sheets.

Recently, a friend alerted me that you can make Cereal Mix in the crock pot. (The crock pot! What?!) She gave me the lowdown on how she does it and I decided to give it a go with my grandmother’s recipe. I must say, it is fantastic! It was a hit with my entire household. It is a great recipe to involve the kids with as it gives them many chances to use their measuring skills and stir. The crock pot never gets very hot so it is also safer than other recipes. It is great to make for snacking on during holidays, football parties and keeps quite well in plastic bags. Perfect for on-the-go snacking. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups Corn Chex cereal
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
  • 3 cups Cheerios cereal
  • 3 cups pretzel sticks
  • 1 can mixed nuts
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
(I actually put a bit more seasoned salt and garlic powder in but this is a good starting point for your first batch to test it out, especially if you are preparing it for kids.)

Instructions:

Mix all four cereals, pretzel sticks and mixed nuts in a large slow cooker. Whisk together olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt and garlic powder and pour (slowly!) over cereal mixture. Mix well.

Cook uncovered on high for approximately 90 minutes, stirring at least every ten minutes. Turn the slow cooker down to low and cook for an additional 20 minutes, again stirring frequently. (Stirring is important, otherwise the mix will burn quickly.) Spread on a cookie sheet to cool.
