Dora and Diego-Let's Explore! at Discovery Cube OC

By Griselda Barragan April 20, 2016

My two year old son's first time at the Dora & Diego - Let's Explore! exhibit at the Discovery Cube Orange County was an utterly fantastic and memorable time. As you enter the exhibit you’ll see the large Pirate Ship in front of you, which immediately caught my son's attention and he ran to it. On the ship he had fun playing with treasure and steering the boat. Then we moved on to Tico's Car & Tree. He enjoyed collecting all the nuts and pushing them into the swiper (it’s really a suction machine) and then guessing which side the nuts would come down on.

The biggest hit was the Animal Rescue Center. He put stuffed animals, like an iguana or sea otter, inside the scanner and a screen in front of him would pop up a scan of the animal and tell him a treatment plan to get them all fixed up! Then he used all the instruments to look into their ears, listen to their hearts, and give them medication as he nursed the animals back to health. He really enjoyed playing veterinarian.

In addition to this creative play area, there were some active play areas, like the Rainforest Maze where you can crawl through a log, as well as hang off monkey bars and climb a wall like a mountain lion. Isa’s Flowery Garden kept my son very busy as he worked at planting some flowers in the flower bed and potting some plants into the correct shapes-- both great fun for him as he worked on his motor skills and his shapes. Another big hit was the digital floor pond projection, where he kicked around lily pads and splashed around near the fish.

Next, the Rocket Ship had a neat memory matching game and puzzles, which would be great for older kids. My son enjoyed playing with the stars at the Constellations exhibit and loved seeing them light up as soon as he fit them into place. Finally, we spent some time on the purple planet (who doesn’t love slides?).

Overall the exhibit was well done, with loads of activities and lots of fun. I love that some of the exhibits were bilingual in writing and audio, keeping true to the TV show. The best thing is that you don’t have to be familiar with Dora and Diego to enjoy the exhibits, as they are vibrant and engaging by themselves. An added bonus is that you get to enjoy the rest of the Discovery Cube. We spent over an hour at the Dora & Diego - Lets Explore! Exhibit and highly recommend it.
